Review
This was a fun series to read, especially since I did it as a buddy read with two friends of mine. These were the same ladies that went with me on the trip to the Book Warehouse and this series kept jumping out at us. It came in a box set and, like everything at Book Warehouse, it was 70% off. All three of us decided to get it and read it together.
Getting into the story, as always, let’s start with the main characters. Signa is the main in the first two books, while her cousin Blythe takes over for part of book two and all of book three. I really liked Signa. She’s fiesty, stubborn, and determined to do what she can to protect the family she has left. Her connection with Death was interesting and I liked how some of it was straightforward and some of it was a bit more ambiguous. Very Death-like, you know? Blythe was also a fun character to read. She speaks her mind and doesn’t suffer fools. After spending a good chunk of her life literally at Death’s door, she has a no nonsense way about her that I really appreciated.
The part of this story world that was really cool were the personifications of these larger than life concepts. We meet Death right away as he takes a particular interest in Signa and her powers. At the end of book one, we meet Fate, who is not a very nice person at all. We spend most of the series trying to find out who Life is (which was actually very obvious and a little frustrating that the characters were so dense and danced around it for most of the book). We also briefly meet a character who represents Chaos and I wish she had stuck around longer. She was a really interesting adversary, but she was barely in the book. Maybe in a future sequel?
