Book Blogger Hop – November 1, 2024

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly feature hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book related question is posted and everyone can share their answers. This week’s question is:

Have you ever participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November, and do you have any favorite books that were born from this writing challenge?

For anyone not in the know, NaNoWriMo is an event that happens every November where writers all over the world try to write 50,000 words in 30 days. The idea is to help get out of your own head when writing, to stop overthinking things and just get the words on the page. The words may not be good, but that’s what editing is for, and you can’t edit what you never wrote down in the first place.

I participated in NaNoWriMo many years ago, although it’s been probably about five years since I have. November tends to be the busiest month at my job, so that definitely cuts into the time and energy I would have for writing. I really enjoyed NaNo when I did participate – I even won one year. Never did anything with those 50,000+ words I wrote, but I definitely enjoyed the process.

(Just logged into their website and it turns out the last time I did this was in 2014 – didn’t realize it was that long ago! That was the year I finished the 50,000 words too.)

As far as books that were born from NaNo, the only one I can think of (which does happen to be one of my favorite books) is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. She definitely became something of a hero to everyone participating as someone who completed the challenge and then actually MADE IT.

There has been a fair amount of controversy over the past few years, but it does look like they have been addressing the issues and making changes. If you love to write, then definitely give this a try. It’s really exciting and there are lots of ways to get involved and meet fellow writers, both online and in person.

Be sure to check out the other posts in this week’s Book Blogger Hop and let me know if you’ve ever participated in NaNoWriMo!

  1. It does sound like a fun event. Maybe when the kids are older.

Time does fly by doesn’t it. COVID took quite a few years too!

I.didnt know that about The Night Circus. I read that years ago one holiday before it became famous 🤣

    Have a great weekend!

  2. I participated in the past too. but it’s been a long while because it was before we moved back stateside and that was almost 7 years ago (and I definitely didn’t try to NaNo while also preparing for an overseas move).

I forgot that The Night Circus was a NaNo novel. I also really enjoyed it. I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. I competed in 2013 and 2014 unsuccessfully, but I am trying again this year. but I’m cheating a little, because the book I’m writing has been pre-started. i think most people start with their idea and their outline… The Night Circus is also one of my favorites, but Water for Elephants was also pretty good.

  4. I’ve attempted to participate in NaNoWriMo, but I never got further than 1,000 words. Now, with everything that’s happened with them due to their stance on A.I., I’m just making time for my writing without worrying about submitting my “Daily Word Count.”
