Reading Challenges Banner

A little bit late into the year, but I wanted to go ahead and post my official reading challenges for 2023.

As always, I will be doing the GoodReads reading challenge. This year, I am setting a lofty goal: 100 books. I have never actually read that many books in a year. The closest I came was 70-something. I have high hopes and have already finished my first one last night!

Reading colors your life

Also back this year is the “Complete the Series” challenge. Below are a list of series that I have read at least one book in, but never finished. My goal, like last year, is to try and tackle six of these series and finish them this year.

The series in question:

  1. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (2 books)
  2. Calliope Reaper-Jones by Amber Benson (5 books)
  3. Deepgate Codex by Alan Campbell (3 books)
  4. Hellsbane series by Paige Cuccaro (3 books)
  5. Periodic by Megan Curd (3 books)
  6. Books of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau (4 books)
  7. Exalted series by Tara Elizabeth (3 books)
  8. The Plantation series by Stella Fitzsimons (7 books)
  9. Scarlet series by A.C. Gaughen (3 books)
  10. Grimm series by Adam Gidwitz (3 books)
  11. Legends of Dimmingwood series by C. Greenwood (6 books)
  12. All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (3 books)
  13. The Chameleon Effect series by Alex Hayes (6 books)
  14. The Spectral City series by Leanna Renee Hieber (3 books)
  15. Rain Wild Chronicles by Robin Hobb (4 books)
  16. Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin (3 books)
  17. Shades of London series by Maureen Johnson (3 books)
  18. Cursebreakers by Brigid Kemmerer (3 books)
  19. Starbound series by Amie Kauffman & Meagan Spooner (3 books)
  20. The Shadow Watch series by S.A. Klopfenstein (4 books)
  21. Arrows trilogy by Mercedes Lackey (3 books)
  22. Five Hundred Kingdoms series by Mercedes Lackey (6 books)
  23. Sevenwaters trilogy by Juliet Marillier (3 books)
  24. The Marked series by March McCarron (4 books)
  25. Angelfire series by Courtney Allison Moulton (3 books)
  26. Abhorsen series by Garth Nix (6 books)
  27. Temeraire series by Naomi Novik (9 books)
  28. War Girls series by Tochi Onyebuchi (2 books)
  29. Want by Cindy Pon (2 books)
  30. The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (13 books)
  31. Elemental Enmity by Christie Rich (4 books)
  32. Athena Protocol by Shamim Sarif (2 books)
  33. Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith (3 books)
  34. Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud (4 books)
  35. Shadow World by Dianne Sylvan (7 books)
  36. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (4 books)
  37. ISAN series by Mary Ting (4 books)
  38. Angels of Elysian by Olivia Wildenstein (3 books)

This does not count the series in which I am waiting for the next book to be released – I’m keeping track of those, just separately. This list used to be over 40 series, but I made good progress last year and hope to continue doing so in 2023.

I am attempting, once again, to work on the Beat the Backlist Challenge! This challenge is hosted by Austine Decker and the goal is to try and whittle down your TBR. Here’s my problem: I have 154 books that I OWN that I haven’t read. A lot of these were free e-books, but still. It’s a lot. It’s ridiculous. I’m not going to list all of the books here, but if you’re curious, you can check out my two GoodReads lists (one for physical books, one for e-books) where I’ve separated them out.

My goal is to read 25 books off of my TBRs (that’s 25 total, not 25 per list). I know there will be other books added (I got some for Christmas that still aren’t on there) and some other new books, that will come my way, so for the sake of this challenge, anything that I received prior to 2023 will be the only ones that count towards this. Anything new purchased or borrowed this year will not count.

A to Z

Lastly, since I know that it is popular right now, I am going to try an A to Z reading challenge. For anyone who doesn’t know what this is, I will be trying to read at least one book beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Articles do not count, so for example, The City of Ember will count as the letter C. If I’m trying to read 100 books, I should be able to carve out 26 of those for this, right?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And that’s it. That should be plenty, right? It seems like a lot, but for most of this, one book can count towards several challenges. I wanted to do a lot this year and this should be challenging while still being a lot of fun.

Are you setting any challenges this year? Let me know so we can cheer each other on!
