Book Review: My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent

my soul to takeTitle: My Soul To Take

Author: Rachel Vincent

Series: Soul Screamers #1

Edition: e-book

Blurb: She doesn’t see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next.

There were a lot of things I loved about this book. For one thing, it was a nice change from your typical vampires, werewolves, and witches that you usually get in paranormal fiction. Vincent puts together a nice mythology about the banshees (or bean sidhes) that always keeps you guessing, right up until the end.

She’s also excellent at writing the end-of-chapter cliffhanger. This book is ridiculously hard to put down.

While the subject matter is pretty dark, it is cut with humor and romance just enough to keep it intense without being depressing or slow. If there was one complaint to make, it would be that the relationship between our two main characters develops very quickly in that YA romance kind of way, although there are reasons why they are so drawn to each other.

This was a fast paced, exciting read with an ending that I did not see coming. It was fun and different and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal YA. I plan on reading the rest of the series as soon as I have a chance.
