There seem to be several books out there about schools that teach magic, from the Harry Potter books to The Magicians to the House of Night series. This next book is a little bit different, and you know I always appreciate something a little bit new.
Hex Hall by Rachel Dawkins is about a reform school for magical teens who get in trouble. Basically, if you put the magical world (called the “Prodigium”) at risk of discovery, you get sent here until you are eighteen and, hopefully, better in control of yourself. Our main character is Sophie, who tries to use her magic to help a girl at her old school prom. This is a no-no. She is sent to Hecate Hall, or Hex Hall as the students call it, where for the first time, Sophie is surrounded by other magical people, along with fairies, werewolves, shapeshifters, and one vampire (who happens to be her roommate).
Along the way, Sophie experiences all the expected teen angst – she makes enemies of the most popular girls in school, she crushes on the cutest guy (who is dating one of the popular girls), but the story is told with a lot of humor and some really cool magic. There are lots of little twists, from a ghost that keeps following Sophie around to students being mysteriously attacked and Sophie’s roommate being blamed for it. Not to mention that there is a super secret society that is out to destroy Prodigium all together.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It was sharp and clever and a lot of fun to read. It’s the first book of the series and I will definitely pick up the next one.
