This series was very, very satisfying. I was a big fan of the original Iron Fey series and read it years ago, but hadn’t sat down for a re-read in a long time. I used it as a sort of finale to my reading year for 2025 and it just felt right. What didn’t feel right was ignoring this sequel trilogy that I had never read before. I didn’t know much about it, only that it involved Ethan, the younger brother of the protagonist of the previous trilogy. I wanted to know what happened to him and this sequel trilogy didn’t disappoint.
Ethan has had a hard life. He was kidnapped by the fae when he was a kid, lost his older sister to the fae when she became the Iron Queen, and has been tormented by fae in and around his house ever since. Naturally, since the fae have wrecked his family, he wants nothing to do with them. Of course we can’t have that, now can we! He has a very rough exterior and doesn’t want to get close to anyone. That doesn’t stop Kenzie, who is an absolute spitfire and won’t take no for an answer. She knows something deeper is going on with Ethan and is not the least bit deterred when she finds out the truth.
One of the things I really loved about the original series was Kagawa’s portrayal of the fae realm and it’s even better this time around. We get to not just see the Summer and Winter courts, we get to see the Iron court now in it’s full power. Meghan has done well in building it from the ground up and is now a powerhouse that can rival both of the other courts, despite being so different and new. Despite his anger and frustration with both the fae and with Meghan, Ethan’s reunion with her was very sweet and the lengths he goes to in order to make things better for his family is just beautiful. There’s a softie hiding under that gruff exterior!
The forgotten are scary villians who are also sympathetic – they’re dying out and need to find a way to save themselves. Of course, the way to do that is catastrophic for nearly everyone else in the world, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do, right? And then there’s Kierran. Ethan’s nephew (who looks like he’s the same age as Ethan) has fallen in love with an exiled fae and will go to any lengths to try and save her, even if it means he has to betray his family and fall in line with the enemy to do it. This also makes him a very sympathetic villian and puts a lot of conflict into the story. Both Ethan and Kierran have to fight each other, but neither of them really wants to do it. They have different ideas of what needs to be done to save the people around them, it just has horrible consequences to the other side. It made for a very compelling story.
Also, Grimalkin continues to be the best character. He’s a cat, after all.
GoodReads rating: 4 stars for all three books
