Blurb: It’s a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.
Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.
Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?
Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.
Review
I didn’t realize until I was writing this review that it had been ten years since I first read this book. No wonder I didn’t remember much about it! I’m so glad that I read it again because I really, really enjoyed it.
It’s a classic “stranded on a deserted island” story – just in space. It definitely lends a more eerie feel to the environment. On a deserted island, you at least know what to expect. No such luck in this place! Even in a future where planets are terraformed and changed over time, this planet doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t follow any of the standard rules of nature, even for a foreign planet, which makes it all the more unsettling to our main characters.
Speaking of which, I really liked both of them. Tarver is a no nonsense military man, but also has a softer side, especially when he talks about his family. His practical nature is the opposite of Lilac, his counterpart in this adventure. However, Lilac isn’t your standard snooty, whiny, rich girl. Okay yes, she can be all of those, but she also isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She may spend a lot of time at frivolous parties, but she also knows how to hot wire the electronics on an escape pod. Definitely someone you need in a crisis like this.
You know from the beginning that these two are probably going to fall for each other. In most books, the conflict would arise from them coming from two different social classes and, while there is some of that, most of the intrigue from this story comes from what they find on this mystery island and how it may or may not be connected back to Lilac’s father, the richest man in the galaxy.
This book was exciting and mysterious with a dash of romance. Loved every minute.
