Teasers & Top Tens – September 10, 2024

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ambrosia at The Purple Booker. Here are the rules if you want to play along:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week’s teaser comes from The Shadow Mission by Shamim Sarif.

“Is that the best you can do, Cait?” I say. “I’ve seen grandmothers pushing shopping carts faster around grocery stores.”

This is the sequel to The Athena Protocol, the one that I hadn’t read yet, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is:

Ten Books That Provide a Much-Needed Escape

This one was a bit hard – what book doesn’t provide us with a much-needed escape? Isn’t that why most of us read? Here are a few that provided me with the best escapes I can think of.

  1. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – I swear, I will put this book on every list that comes up if I can help it. It is the definition of escapism. Who wouldn’t want to disappear into a magical circus?
  2. Caraval by Stephanie Garber – Another magical . . . not quite circus, but similar in atmosphere? Hard to explain, but just as beautiful to escape into.
  3. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson – A more realistic escape, this time to a whole other continent. Who wouldn’t want to go on a scavenger hunt backpacking through Europe?
  4. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll – One of the original escapes people think of is falling down the rabbit hole. Why not go back to where it all started?
  5. The Circle by David Eggers – This may be a weird one, but even though the Circle (basically Google, but on steroids) is somewhat malicious and trying to take over the world, I still want to work there?
  6. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa – There are many book out there about getting lost in the realm of faerie. This one is one of my favorites.
  7. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel – If you want to escape life here on Earth, why not try living on the Moon? In a twisty time turn-y sort of way?
  8. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson – What is one of the best ways to escape? How about a cross country road trip! What a great way to see the country and learn more about yourself in the process.
  9. Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty – Another potential weird one, but when I read this, all I wanted to do was go away for a week to a health retreat where I didn’t have to speak and didn’t have to make decisions. Even if I end up getting slightly drugged.
  10. Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan – My favorite vampire series. If vamps were actually real and had a hidden society, this is how they would do it. And I would definitely want to be a vampire under David Solomon’s rule.
