Teasers & Top Tens – September 3, 2024

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ambrosia at The Purple Booker. Here are the rules if you want to play along:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This weeks teaser is from The Athena Protocol by Shamim Sarif.

Sometimes, I wonder if the world might just look better through a riflescope. Crisper, clearer, narrowed down. Less messy.

Starting this re-read in order to read the sequel, which I never got around to reading. I got to participate in the blog tour of this one back in 2019 and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to reading it again.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is:

Ten Books Involving Food

This one was really hard. I spent a fair amount of time going through my reads and trying to remember if any of them were food specific. The answer was – not really, and definitely not many. The definition of “involving food” may have to be stretched, but here’s what I have:

  1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – There isn’t much food in the districts, but there’s a lot of food at the Capitol, and Katniss talks about it quite a bit. Plus, finding food during the Games themselves is pretty important.
  2. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson – I hesitated putting this one on there, but since the main character has an eating disorder, you can definitely say that her relationship to food is a huge part of the story.
  3. The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau – This second book in the City of Ember series involves a town that is having issues with their food supply, an issue that is compounded when the people of Ember end up settling there.
  4. The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst – A newish read, when Kiela sets up her spellshop, she does it by pretending to sell jam. Plus one of the other main characters in town is a baker.
  5. Polgara the Sorceress by David Eddings – I’m counting this one because during all the years that Polgara hid at Faldor’s farm, she worked as the head cook in his kitchen. Garion also continuously talks about how her food is the best.
  6. Splintered by A.G. Howard Another one that might be a weird choice, but between fixing the “Mad Hatter’s” tea party and the Feast of Beasts (where you have to fight your food), there’s quite a few food references.
  7. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis – When you have a big part of the story begins with a certain character getting tempted by Turkish Delight, you can definitely count it for this list.
  8. Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim – Honestly, this was the first book I thought of for this topic. A magic cookbook that helps people when you cook the food for them? It’s a beautiful story. Food is magic!
  9. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin – I could have put any of the Song of Ice and Fire books on here, but I’ll just stick with the first one. Any man who can make the description of a meal last for five pages is a man who knows how to write about food!
  10. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – The main character is forced to work as a food taster and try and learn how to both identify and counteract poisons in the process.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  3. Splintered! It’s been so long since I’ve read it that I forgot about it. Great list!
