Teasers & Top Tens – July 9, 2024

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ambrosia at The Purple Booker. Here are the rules if you want to play along:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week’s teaser is from Heir by Sabaa Tahir.

On the first day out of Navium, Sirsha saw a few pirate ships approaching the Empire’s southern coast. By the third day, she’d seen dozens. She braced for an attack, but the Kegari Sail above served as a warning. The pirates stayed away.

This is my NetGalley ARC. It’s not coming out until October, but I’m going ahead and reading it now. It’s so good so far! I love Sabaa Tahir’s writing!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is a throwback freebie, picking any topic from previous week’s that we either haven’t answered yet or want to revisit. I am picking one from 2018 that I don’t think I ever did, but it’s also been a while. I chose:

Ten Longest Books I’ve Ever Read

I do enjoy a giant book from time to time. Here are the ones that were the more giant.

  1. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo – 1463 pages: The legend. The classic. The inspiration for the famous Broadway show. Love the musical, but the book is a BEAST to get through.
  2. A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin – 1177 pages: Here’s the thing. If I were going by just pure numbers, four of my top ten would be from A Song of Ice and Fire. I don’t think Martin knows how to write a short book. I decided to just list the longest one here to not be repetative, but know that A Dance With Dragons, A Feast for Crows, and A Clash of Kings would have made this list as well.
  3. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke – 1006 pages: This is the strangest book and, honestly, even though I love it, it’s probably a bit too long. It does tend to ramble, but I do love the story world created – curmudgeonly men in 19th century England. What’s not to love?
  4. Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas – 980 pages: Out of the 1000s now! The final book in the Throne of Glass series was a whopper, and such a fitting end to this epic saga.
  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling – 912 pages: The longest of the Harry Potter books was not the last one, but book #5. I remember how surprised people where when it first came out, but honestly, the book still reads so fast, despite being so weighty.
  6. Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey – 901 pages: This is the first book in Phedra’s Trilogy and, while it’s the longest, they are all close to the same size. If you like your fantasy mixed with some pretty spicy erotica, this is the series for you, but it’s also a time commitment.
  7. Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros – 895 pages: Both of the Empyrean books have been on the larger side, but this one was a tad bit bigger. These were so good and I can’t wait for the next one, because Holy Cliffhangers, Batman!
  8. Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare – 893 pages: Cassandra Clare is also no stranger to the longer novel. This is the last book in the Dark Artifices trilogy, a set of books that broke my heart in so many ways. 10/10 recommend.
  9. Winter by Marissa Meyer – 827 pages: This one came as a surprise to me, probably because it’s been a while since I read these. This is the 4th and final book in the Lunar Chronicles and one that I definitely have to schedule for a re-read soon because, honestly, I don’t remember much about them except that I really enjoyed them.
  10. The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray – 819 pages: Last but not least, we have the 3rd and final book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy. I remember this being such a beautiful story, but alas, it’s another one that I don’t remember a lot of the details. Adding to my re-read queue!

Please leave your teasers and top tens in comments!

  1. I think this is a great time of year to settle into a very long book. 🙂

  2. I absolutely adored the Kushiel series! Her writing is so elegant.

Here is our <a href=”https://www.longandshortreviews.com/miscellaneous-musings/top-ten-tuesday-books-that-make-me-hungry/“>Top Ten Tuesday.</a> Thank you!

  3. The longest book I ever read was a Robert Gailbraith book. Sadly, I have not read the ones above but a couple are on my list to read!

  4. I think A Storm of Swords is the longest book I’ve ever read. I should double-check that. I’ve read a lot of long books. 🙂
