Blurb: Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

Review

I really enjoyed this one. It combines two of my favorite genres into one: vampire stories and dystopian stories. Basically, that’s what the Coldtowns are and what the world has become – a dystopian society where vampires are segregated into cities of their own in order to protect humanity.

I liked that this played with some of your standard vampire rules a bit. It wasn’t just that you got bit and became a vampire. Not everyone who gets bitten succumbs to vampirism. There are ways to avoid it, although they are not too pleasant. They call becoming a vampire “getting cold” or “turning cold” since you lose your body heat. You do not, however, lose your humanity, or at least not all of it. You still know who you are and who your friends are, but even that will not always help you control your base vampire nature when you are hungry.

Coldtown was also a very interesting idea. Vampires are hated and feared, but they are also idolized in many ways. Lots of them live these flamboyant, hedonistic lives, all of which is videoed and livestreamed to the outside world, enough so that humans will come to Coldtowns willingly in order to be a part of the “fun.” Coldtown isn’t all fun and games, though. Part of town is dark and dangerous, as not all vampires are wealthy and most are not accepting or trusting of humans.

Through all of this, we follow Tara, her ex-boyfriend who has been bitten, and a vampire who did not attack the people at the party, but also has conflicting explanations as to who he is and why he’s there. As they make their way towards and then through Coldtown, the story and environment grows and expands into many twists and turns. It was really fun to explore. As much as I’ve been enjoying reading standalone books, this is one that I wouldn’t mind being part of a series, as I feel like there are many other stories that could be told in this world.
