Blurb: “If Lorelai Gilmore of Gilmore Girls was dropped into a thriller, it might resemble this appealing novel.” –Kirkus Reviews
Thirty-eight-year-old Nicole Adams has given up on finding love. The single mother focuses on the two things she cherishes most—her sixteen-year-old son Justin and her art—while relying on the support of her friends Mike and Jamie and her loyal sister Caroline.
When she convinces a prominent Los Angeles museum to feature a large-scale installation of her ceramics work, she thinks her life has finally turned a corner.
Then Justin brings a girl, Daniela, home to spend the night. Daniela’s angry parents have thrown her out of the house because she’s pregnant with Justin’s child. Shattered, Nicole takes Daniela in and by doing so is drawn into the inner circle of Daniela’s family and a frightening world of deceit and violence.
Nicole struggles to keep life going as normal. Forced to deal with people she doesn’t trust or like, fearful for the future of both her son and the grandchild they’re expecting, Nicole wonders if she can do what she tells Justin to do: always have faith in yourself and do the right thing.
What We Do for Love: A Novel is a standalone story written by award-winning author Anne Pfeffer.
Review: I will say, this is a bit out of my usual genre. It’s actually been a while since I’ve read strictly contemporary novel, and certainly not a romance. While GoodReads lists this as a romance novel, and there is some of that in this book, this story is about a single mother who is on her very last thread of sanity.
I absolutely loved Nicole as a character. She is so strong, but at the same time, very real and easy to relate to. Her reactions to finding out about her teenage son becoming a father are understandable – she is terrified, angry, disappointed, worried, but above all, willing to do whatever she can to help him and his baby mama.
There is a lot going on with said baby mama, Daniela. She seems very mysterious and I kept waiting for the payoff of her story. It did not disappoint. Instead, it took what I was expecting and completely turned it on it’s head. I love when books can surprise me like that!
This book is branded as a thriller, but I think this is a book more about relationships. The relationship between mother and son, sister and sister, woman and man-she-had-an-intense-relationship-with-but-now-they-are-just-friends-but-ARE-THEY. And that’s just a few of them. There are a lot of relationships to dissect throughout this story and seeing how they all come together was very satisfying.
Bottom line: I enjoyed this book very much. I kept picking it back up over and over again to see what happened next. Thank you to Rockstar Book Tours for the review opportunity! And here’s another opportunity, if you want to check this book out: What We Do For Love will be available for FREE on Amazon May 22-24!

I don’t read a ton of contemporary romances either, but the cover of this book and your review certainly piqued my interest!
Yay! I did think this was a beautiful cover, and the story was really good too. 🙂
