Is my teaser from a Harry Potter book this week? Why, yes. Yes, it is. 🙂

Katie was removed to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries the following day, by which time the news that she had been cursed had spread all over the school, though the details were confused and nobody other than Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Leanne seemed to know that Katie herself had not been the intended target.

By the way, did everyone hear that J.K. Rowling had published a new crime novel under a pseudonym? It’s called The Cuckoo’s Calling and she published it under the name Robert Galbraith back in April. Isn’t that wild? She was quoted saying how nice it was to write something without a lot of hype and attention drawn to it. Less pressure. I can only imagine.

Next up is Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by “The Broke and the Bookish.” This week’s topic was interesting, because there are several books on my shelf that I never see anyone else talk about. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought these people deserved a mention. Here we go!

Top Ten (or Six) Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

1. Obert Skye – I love the Leven Thumps books, even if they are aimed at a much younger audience. They are funny, creative, crazy, and one of the most imaginative stories I’ve ever read. If you need a smile, go pick these up.

2. Guy Gavriel Kay – Die hard fantasy fans will recognize this name, but many people won’t. I first read Kay’s work for a book club. We read Tigana, which is now one of my favorite fantasy stories. His works are epic and romantic, but have a dark undercurrent that draws you in. And the writing is beautiful.

3. Susan Kay – Another Kay, although I don’t think they’re related. Susan Kay wrote another of my favorite books: Phantom, in which she wrote essentially the back story to the character we know as the Phantom of the Opera. Other than rabid fans of the musical, I don’t hear people talk about this one either. I just found out she had a book before Phantom called Legacy, about Queen Elizabeth I. Might have to check that out.

4. Jennifer Estep – I was introduced to the Mythos Academy books at the end of last year, and I really enjoyed them. A fun twist on mythology, adding on to the popular boarding school trope, with a dash of romance and mystery thrown in. These books are a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to read the next one – she likes to give us cliffhangers!

5. Jonathan Stroud – This is another one that I got introduced to via the book club over at “The Mallorean Tavern.” I read the first book in the Bartimaeus series and it is absolutely delightful. Full of magic and a lot of humor – who doesn’t like a really snarky demon? – these books are aimed at middle grade readers, but I just loved them. Well, the first one anyway. I do plan on reading the others soon.

6. Mira Grant/Seanan Maguire – Most of you who follow my blog know that I was head over heels about Mira Grant’s Newsflesh trilogy – Feed, Deadline and Blackout. These books were such a roller coaster ride, they made me love books about zombies, even when I didn’t like zombies.
