Welcome to another Tuesday! Today I have another Teaser, thanks to MizB at “Should Be Reading,” and another Top Ten List, thanks to the lovely folks at “The Broke and the Bookish.”
For Teaser Tuesday, the rules are simple:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Here’s my teaser for the week:
“The first time she set foot in the Haven, she was a slave, wasting away from starvation and abuse . . . the next time Cora set foot in the Haven, she, too, was a Queen.”
– Shadow’s Fall by Dianne Sylvan
These two phrases aren’t right next to each other like this, but I love the contrast between the two and how they simply, yet fully explain Cora’s character. I love this series so much, although I’m barely skimming over the first three in order to get my hands on book 4.
On to Top Ten Tuesday. This week’s list is a bit difficult for me. It’s all about what draws you to a book, what will make you pick it up out of a whole shelf of others. The short answer for me – almost anything. I’m not very picky about what I read. I’ll give anything a go. Here are a few things that I do notice.
Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly
Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book
1. haunted – What can I say? I like me a good ghost story.
2. ancient – I’ve read a few books set in an ancient time period, like the Roman Empire or Ancient Greece, and really enjoyed them.
3. King Arthur or Merlin – I am a sucker for a good Arthurian legend, especially if it’s a different retelling of some sort.
4. teenagers – As most of you know, I love reading Young Adult literature. I love reading about people with a different coming-of-age experience than mine. Helps me relive my youth.
5. fairies – If you believe in fairies, clap your hands! I’m especially fond of retellings of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but any fairy story will do.
6. magic – If you like fantasy like I do, you have to like magic. I love reading stories with an interesting and different magic system.
7. strong female character – Gone are the days when we stepped aside for our male betters. Give me a good heroine who kicks butt any day!
8. Europe – I love books set in other places, and since I really want to explore the great cities of Europe one day (London, Paris, Rome, sigh), I love reading about them as well.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, although I’m sure there’s more.

Ooo cool (and poetic) teaser! Here’s our teasers!
Thanks! The funny thing – I think a lot of people thought that Cora is the main character, but she’s not. She’s a pretty minor character actually, just with a really tragic yet triumphant story.
Great teaser. My teasers this week are from The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa and An Affair of Deceit by Jamie Michele. Happy reading!
Anything by Julie Kagawa is great. I haven’t read The Eternity Cure yet, but I really want to!
Great teaser! I’m intrigued! =)
Here’s my teaser!
Also great list! Ancient could’ve definitely be on my list too and I actually need to read some more king arthur/merlin books because I love stories like that. =)
Here’s Top Ten!
~Stephanie @ Bookfever
King Arthur/Merlin books are probably my favorites. If you haven’t read The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, you need to. Soooo good. There are others too – a classic would be the Merlin series by Mary Stewart. There’s also the Pendragon series by Stephen Lawhead. And probably a whole lot more, but those are my favorites. 😉
Oooo from slave to queen…nice. Here is my tthttp://newpaperadventures.blogspot.com/2013/04/teaser-tuesday-april-30-2013.html
It’s a really cool story line, even if it isn’t the main plot. Actually the main character goes through a similar experience. She wasn’t a slave, but she was pretty down trodden, and now she’s a Queen vampire. I love this series so much, can you tell? 😉
I will instantly pick up a book with a strong heroine no matter the topic! I am glad to see a surge of kick-butt females gracing the pages of YA. I too enjoy magic and hauntings! Great list!

I’m glad to see more strong heroines out there. So much better than these whispy things who are afraid of their shadow.
I’m totally with you on the strong female characters!
Absolutely!
I’m totally with you on the Strong female character and Europe. I love those types of books too. Also, interesting tease.

Even better – strong female characters who live in Europe! Who do magic and . . . is half fairy? I’m sure there’s at least one book out there like that. 😉
Love your list. Europe/foreign settings made my list, too. I probably won’t ever get to see as much of the world as I’d like to, so naturally books are the next best thing.
I couldn’t come up with ten either, so I listed some terms that made me NOT want to buy the book 🙂
Here’s mine: http://anannysliterarymusings.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/top-ten-tuesday-teaser-tuesday-2/
I agree. Traveling the globe costs a lot of money. Living vicariously through a character who is traveling the globe? Much cheaper!
Haha, absolutely!
Attention getting teaser!
Thanks! A lot of people seem to like it, which I find funny since it isn’t even about a main character. That’s one of the things I like about these books – even the side characters have rich stories.
Great list, love Europe too! Should I have wrote Europe instead of just Venice as I love Paris too LOL
My Top Ten
Have a great week!
Hey, nothing wrong with Venice! I was going to put Paris and London, but then I figured I ought to just list Europe and be done with it. So much culture and history . . . I couldn’t limit myself to just one city!
Hope you have a great week as well!
So many great topics today just makes me realize I’ll give pretty much anything a try. I could see a great story coming out of using all of your topics at once.
I’m pretty much the same way. I’ll read just about anything, or at least give it a try. That’s why this week’s topic was so hard. What will make me pick up a book? Um, it’s a book. If it’s in front of me, I’ll read it. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
