Top Ten Tuesday time, hosted by the lovely folks over at “The Broke and the Bookish.” Oh, this week’s topic is a tough one for me. Y’all know how much I love books, but this week’s topic is asking me to pick only ten of them to take with me to a deserted island. How can I narrow down my library to only ten books? How would I survive? Let’s cross our fingers that I will never have to find out.
Top Ten Books I’d Want on a Deserted Island
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling – I’d need to bring at least one Harry Potter book with me. Definitely not all of them though – those books are huge and would never fit into my backpack! So I’ll go with the final book, the one that made me feel all the feelings.
2. The Silmarillion by J.RR. Tolkien – Now I love Lord of the Rings as much as the next person, but I’ve never, ever read The Silmarillion. As much as I adore Middle Earth, this book is dense! I’ve tried reading it many times and have had to give up. Maybe if I was stuck on a deserted island, I could get through it.
3. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin – I do enjoy this series (A Song of Ice and Fire), but I probably enjoy the first book the most, just because it’s an introduction to the world of Westeros and everything hasn’t gone to hell yet. Plus, these books are all huge, so they would take up a lot of deserted island time.
4. Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo by Obert Skye – The Leven Thumps books are so creative and charming and silly at times. They are lighthearted and fun, while still having serious moments (although one of the main characters in this book is a talking toothpick – how serious is that?). I think I would need something like this if I was stuck on an island somewhere.
5. Paper Towns by John Green – While I love all of John Green’s books, Paper Towns was the first one that I read and is still my favorite. I love the characters, I love the road trip at the end. I love all of it. It makes me happy, nostalgic, and sad all at the same time.
6. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley – It’s getting close to time for me to re-read this book. It is my all time favorite book ever. If I am stuck in the middle of nowhere, this book has to go with me. End of story.
7. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy – I’m bringing this one for much the same reasons as The Silmarillion. I made a goal several years ago that I was going to read War and Peace. I even started it once or twice, but never finished it. I would probably need a long period of time on a deserted island in order to manage it.
8. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro – This book is so good. Childlike, but at the same time very deep. I remember the first time reading it nearly blew my mind. It was that good and that unexpected.
9. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline – I’ve mentioned this book several times before, but it will go on this list too. The main reason I’d bring it is because every time I read it, I notice something new. That would come in handy on a deserted island.
10. Belgarath the Sorcerer by David Eddings – I knew I wanted to bring an Eddings book, but wasn’t sure which one. Belgarach the Sorcerer was a companion volume to the Belgariad and Mallorean series that covers a lot more time, giving a good overview, not to mention a very in depth character study of one of the main characters.
So there’s my ten. Which books would you want to take?

Life With No Plot 
You are really getting me to thinking….and reading. Just seem to waste too much time on cooking, laundry, etc. I do need to learn how to speed read but seems that I’d miss nuances etc.
Eh, I gave up on cleaning long ago. Just ask my husband! 🙂
Ooo; the Simarillion is a great choice! Definitely one of those “Why didn’t I think of that?!” books! I hope on your island you’d get through it!! (I have a copy on my shelf that I’m afraid to even crack!!)

Oh, I like your list too. Looks like we went along the same lines – we would need the free time that we would only get stranded on a deserted island just to get through them. I know that’s the only way I’d make it through War and Peace. Although I did read Anna Karenina and it didn’t take me too long.

I agree about Belgarath the Sorcerer – I’ve read that book SO MANY TIMES. Even if I don’t re-read the Belgariad/Malloreon, sometimes I pick Belgarath up and read it just because.
I’d have to take something Mercedes Lackey as well… luckily lots of her trilogies come in omnibus editions… it would be a toss-up between The Last Herald-Mage trilogy and the Arrows trilogy.
Actually, now that I’ve thought about omnibus editions, I have the two-volume set of the Belgariad and the two-volume set of the Malloreon. That’s only four books covering the whole series, so those would have to go too.
