Book Blogger Hop is a weekly feature hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book related question is posted and everyone can share their answers. This week’s question is:
If you could write the sequel to a classic book, which one would it be? What new characters or plot twists would you bring in?
This is a tough one and really depends on how you define a “classic” book. My first thought was a children’s book, but I couldn’t really think of any in particular that fit the bill. My next thought was just a literary classic, and that was a bit easier. I picked one of my all time favorites, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.
I’ll be completely honest: while I absolutely love this book and adore Jane, the fact that she ended up with Rochester at the end always felt a little flat to me. Yes, she loved him, and yes, women back then didn’t have much of a life unless they got married, but ugh! He was so unpleasant! He lied about being married and keeping his wife locked in the attic and almost made Jane a bigamist in the process! Yes, Berthe was mad and, yes, she made his life miserable, but there was no excuse for bringing Jane into that situation and making promises he couldn’t keep.
Sorry for the rant. Moving on.
There are a few books that have been written around Jane Eyre’s story, but my sequel would start off with Rochester having died, leaving Jane a young widow with the remainder of his money. Because of how pragmatic she is, I would like to see what she would do with it. Since she had experience living in a group home/boarding school for young disadvantaged girls, maybe she could open her own school, something brighter and more hopeful than Lowood was. Now that Adele is grown, or mostly grown, maybe she could come back and help teach at the school, creating a new generation of intelligent, free thinking young women. Not sure what plot twists I would add, although there are loads of possibilities for new characters, between students and teachers. Not sure if this would make a good book or not, but it would be interesting to try.
Be sure to check out the other answers of this week’s Book Blogger Hop and let me know which classic book you would write a sequel to!
