Blurb: Scarlet’s true identity has been revealed, but her future is uncertain. Her forced marriage to Lord Gisbourne threatens Robin and Scarlet’s love, and as the royal court descends upon Nottingham for the appointment of a new Sheriff, the people of Nottingham hope that Prince John will appoint their beloved Robin Hood. But Prince John has different plans for Nottingham that revolve around a fateful secret from Scarlet’s past even she isn’t yet aware of. Forced to participate at court alongside her ruthless husband, Scarlet must bide her time and act the part of a noblewoman—a worthy sacrifice if it means helping Robin’s cause and a chance at a future with the man she loves. With a fresh line of intrigue and as much passion as ever, the next chapter in Scarlet’s tale will have readers talking once again.
Review
This is such a fun series! I always love new takes on old stories and I’m so glad I revisited this one. As a reminder, this was a series where I read the first book ages ago (just checked – it was in 2013 and you can read that review here), but never read any further that that once future books were released. The initial story behind book 1 was that Robin Hood’s compatriot, Will Scarlet, was actually a girl in disguise. She’s a tough girl with a rough exterior who may or may not be in love with Rob and, through the course of the story, you figure out that she might be hiding her true identity.
(In case you’re as oblivious as I was the first time I read book one, think really hard about a strong woman from the Robin Hood story who might have been re-imagined this way. There’s really only one, and yes, this is her.)
I still really love Scarlet and enjoyed seeing how her story played out in this book. She married Guy of Gisbourne at the end of the first book as a bargain to save Rob’s life (which surprisingly worked). This forced her to go back into life as a noble, the same life she had been running away from, but worse than that, it leaves her at the mercy of two very evil men. Prince John is just plain awful. Power hungry doesn’t even begin to describe it. He loves hurting people, as Scarlet learns all too well. Despite this, she remains true to her people and
Just when you think that you’ve gotten enough plot twists, this book throws another one at you that was a complete surprise. And not like the other plot twist, where I really should have known better. Let’s just say there’s a good reason why Prince John need to deal with Scarlet before King Richard comes home.
Still a fun story and well worth continuing the series. On to book 3!
