Review

This series, man. Every time I think it’s gonna zig, it ends up zagging.

We get more of Gray’s story, which I really enjoyed, and Gray also finds love! It made me so happy! Watching him drop some of that gruff exterior and bring out the softie that was inside him all along – loved it. Lia Mara is really good for him, and he’s really good for her as well.

Speaking of Lia Mara, it was really cool seeing the inner workings of Syhl Shallow. They were just a faceless enemy in book one, savage and deadly, attacking the cities at the border. Now we have names and faces to put to these folks and, while several of them are bloodthirsty and awful, the vast majority just want to do what they can to protect their people and help them survive. Their culture is very different from Emberfall, but that doesn’t mean that peace isn’t possible.

What has been really interesting about this book and in book two is seeing Rhen, the one we were rooting for in book one, kind of becoming the bad guy. Not entirely. I think he has good intentions deep down. He just refuses to listen or let anyone else help him, desperately afraid of losing his kingdom and magic taking over. It causes him to pull away from Harper and doesn’t let him even consider reconciling with Gray, even after he learns the truth of Gray’s identity.

I spent a good portion of this book having no idea how it would end. It was such a good conclusion to a fun trilogy.
