REVIEW: The Fallen Series

I’m so glad to finally finish this series and get this review up! This marks the first series I’ve finished for my challenge and, I have to say, I really enjoyed it! Let’s get into it.

About the Books

The Fallen series by Lauren Kate

Book 1

  • Title: Fallen
  • Pages: 464
  • Dates Read: October 25-30, 2024
  • Blurb: There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori. Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luceβ€”and goes out of his way to make that very clearβ€”she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret… even if it kills her.

Book 2

  • Title: Torment
  • Pages: 452
  • Dates Read: November 2-12, 2024
  • Blurb: Hell on earth. That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel. It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcastsβ€”immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding somethingβ€”something dangerous. What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Book 3

  • Title: Passion
  • Pages: 420
  • Dates Read: January 1-3, 2025
  • Blurb: Luce would die for Daniel. And she has. Over and over again. Throughout time, Luce and Daniel have found each other, only to be painfully torn apart: Luce dead, Daniel left broken and alone. But perhaps it doesn’t need to be that way… . Luce is certain that somethingβ€”or someoneβ€”in a past life can help her in her present one. So she begins the most important journey of this lifetime… going back eternities to witness firsthand her romances with Daniel… and finally unlock the key to making their love last. Cam and the legions of angels and Outcasts are desperate to catch Luce, but none are as frantic as Daniel. He chases Luce through their shared pasts, terrified of what might happen if she rewrites history. Because their romance for the ages could go up in flames… forever.

Book 4

  • Title: Rapture
  • Pages: 466
  • Dates Read: January 4-7, 2025
  • Blurb: When evil triumphs… when the world ends… trust your love. The sky is dark with wings… . Like sand in an hourglass, time is running out for Luce and Daniel. To stop Lucifer from erasing the past, they must find the place where the angels fell to earth. Dark forces are after them, and Daniel doesn’t know if he can do thisβ€”live only to lose Luce again and again. Yet together they will face an epic battle that will end with lifeless bodies… and angel dust. Great sacrifices are made. Hearts are destroyed. And suddenly Luce knows what must happen. For she was meant to be with someone other than Daniel. The curse they’ve borne has always and only been about herβ€”and the love she cast aside. The choice she makes now will be the only one that truly matters. In the fight for Luce, who will win? The astonishing conclusion to the Fallen series. Heaven can’t wait any longer.

Review

I really enjoyed this series. I wish it hadn’t taken me so long to finish it.

Obviously, major spoilers abound.

First off, I have to say this right off the bat. The best thing about this series is the fact that Kate didn’t give away too much too soon. For example, you know that Luce isn’t exactly normal – she’s living many different lives and seems to have some sort of curse that keeps her dying as a teenager. Normally, in many other YA fantasy stories, the big secret would be announced in book 2 or 3, and then the following books would be spent figuring out what to do with that knowledge. In this series, WE DON’T FIND OUT WHO AND WHAT LUCE REALLY IS UNTIL THE TWO THIRDS THROUGH THE LAST BOOK!

Here’s the best thing – it’s done in a way that didn’t completely annoy me. Instead, I felt even more engaged. It didn’t feel like the story was just dragging out. It progressed really well and kept a really good pace.

On to the characters. I really liked Luce a lot. She’s definitely a survivor and I loved how she kept taking matters into her own hands. So many people around her tried to make decisions for her or try to contain her and she was having none of it! Did it get her into trouble? Oh yes, quite a bit, many times. As for Daniel, eh, he was okay. To me, he didn’t have much personality. That could also be because the rest of the supporting cast was just so much more interesting. Cam, Arriane, Gabbe, Molly, Penn, Shelby, Miles – I could read about them all day.

There is a book 5 to this series, sort of, which tells a story about Cam. I’d much rather read about Cam then about Daniel, which is probably a bit sad since Daniel was supposed to be our big romantic lead. Oh well. Book 5 is not part of this storyline, so I didn’t read it this time around, but I might read it someday on it’s own.

GoodReads rating: Solid 4 stars for each of them.
