Book Blogger Hop – October 25, 2024

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly feature hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book related question is posted and everyone can share their answers. This week’s question is:

Which horror-themed book or novel is your all-time favorite? Which one made you shiver or made you feel like it was Halloween?

I decided to go deep into the vault with this one and chose one of the first really scary books that I read as a kid – Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn. This was one of the first books where I felt that tingle of unease in my gut, where I didn’t want to keep reading but also didn’t want to stop, that actually gave me nightmares. For a kids’ book, it’s genuinely creepy. I haven’t read it in decades, but this is making me want to find it somewhere and see if it still holds up.

Here’s the blurb, if anyone’s interested:

Heather is such a whiny little brat. Always getting Michael and me into trouble. But since our mother married her father, we’re stuck with her … our “poor stepsister” who lost her real mother in a mysterious fire.

But now something terrible has happened. Heather has found a new friend, out in the graveyard behind our home—a girl named Helen who died with her family in a mysterious fire over a hundred years ago. Now her ghost returns to lure children into the pond … to drown! I don’t want to believe in ghosts, but I’ve followed Heather into the graveyard and watch her talk to Helen. And I’m terrified. Not for myself, but for Heather…

It’s funny, though, because I was reading through some reviews on GoodReads and one of the things people kept pointing at was how horribly irresponsible the parents in this were. Hey, it was the 80s! Helicopter parents didn’t exist back then! I’m sure looking at it now through 2024-eyes, it’s probably pretty bad, but it didn’t strike me as strange back in the day.

Be sure to check out the other posts in this week’s Book Blogger Hop and let me know your favorite horror-themed book of all time!

  1. That sounds like the kind of book I would have picked up in elementary school, at least as long as the cover looked ghost-y. I’d get pretty much every ghost/horror book available in the book orders. I hope you have a great weekend.
