I only listened to two audio books in September. One of them was fairly lackluster, but the other one was excellent. Shall we?
Ensnared
Author: A.G. Howard
Narrator: Rebecca Gibel
Eh. You may remember from last month’s Audio Roundup that I wasn’t particularly enjoying Gibel’s performance for the Splintered series. I did enjoy Ensnared the best out of all of the books. It felt like Gibel was finally settling in with some of the characters. I still think she was a bit too heavy handed with Morpheus, although since he was dealing with some pretty heavy situations, it worked a bit better. She also tended to make Alyssa sound much older than what she should have been. I know there’s a lot going on, but deep down, she’s just a young girl, not a thirty year old woman. The main good thing was at least the performances across all three books were consistent, so I knew what to expect. Still glad I listened to them, but these were not my favorite, audio book-wise.

Clockwork Angel
Author: Cassandra Clare
Narrator: Jennifer Ehle
Okay, this performance was absolutely amazing. My favorite Shadowhunter narrator so far in a world that has so many narrators. I’ve been looking forward to this one, as Infernal Devices is one of my favorite Shadowhunter series, and it did not disappoint. Ehle’s performance is masterful. I absolutely loved her accent work, since this series is set in late 1800s London, especially the villains. Mrs. Black and Mrs. Dark were even more terrifying due to her interpretation of them. I also loved how she portrayed Will Herondale. He comes across as a wisecracker who takes nothing seriously, but there is a lot much deeper under the surface, a vulnerability that is sometimes hard to see, but is definitely there. Ehle hit this balance perfectly. It was also nice to see the contrast between all the different British accents and Tessa’s American accent. Very well done.
