Book Blogger Hop is a weekly feature hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book related question is posted and everyone can share their answers. This week’s question is:
It’s back-to-school time. What book would you recommend to students, whether it’s an educational read or an enjoyable diversion from textbooks?
Oh, this is a good one! There are so many that would be really good for students, but I think I will go with Maus by Art Spiegelman. For anyone not familiar, this is a two part graphic novel that tells the story of the artist’s father who was a Holocaust survivor. The story is shown depicting different animals as the different groups of people in the story – Jews are mice, the Nazis are cats, and so on. It’s definitely an educational read, but I think the graphic novel format would also be an enjoyable diversion from regular textbooks. It obviously deals with some very difficult subject matter, but it does so in an engaging and entertaining way.
Sadly, this book has been the subject of several book bans, keeping it out of schools. I don’t understand why – the reasons stated made no sense to me. Is it difficult to read at times? Of course. It’s supposed to be. You shouldn’t read about the Holocaust and feel comfortable! Besides that, this book is not just about history, it is about family and what generational trauma can do to your family relationships. It’s a very important story, brilliantly told, and I genuinely think that everyone should read it.

Nice post 🌹🌹
I almost included Maus in my list. I think that’s a great choice and the format and use of animals is likely to be more engaging in some ways than a historical text about that time period. Most of the books I thought of have been banned or challenged too, sadly. Thank you for sharing! I hope you have a great weekend!
A good choice. I want to read it at some point.
Have a great weekend!
