Book Blogger Hop – September 6, 2024

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly feature hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book related question is posted and everyone can share their answers. This week’s question is:

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. What role have libraries played in your reading journey? Do you have any recommendations for books or fond recollections involving libraries?

Libraries are awesome. Have they been a part of my reading journey? Absolutely! I still remember the library I used to go to when I was a kid in south Florida. The children’s section had a play area shaped like a tug boat that you could climb up in. I loved when it was empty (although that rarely happened) because I would climb up to the little cubby at the top with my book and read. My mom had to drag me out of there!

When I was a bit older, we would make special trips to go to the main library branch in downtown Fort Lauderdale. At the time, it was the biggest library I had ever seen and it was always cool to see all the different resources they had.

When I went back to college in 2007, I had a part-time job in our campus library. It was in the cataloging department, so I got to see all the new acquisitions and help prepare them to go out on the shelves (lots of stamping, stickers, and installing the “tattle tape”). It is still, to this day, the most fun job I’ve ever had (although the one I have now is a close second). The best part was that if a book came through that we were interested in, all we had to do was put a sticky note on it. Then, once my supervisor scanned it into the system so it became an official library record, she would just hand it to us after our shift.

I don’t get to go to the library as much anymore, although our local downtown library (I’m in North Carolina now) just got renovated a few years ago and it’s really beautiful. The old building was falling apart and I’m so glad they took such good care of it. My daughter and I would go there while she was homeschooled to do her end of year exams and she still goes there from time to time to work on her college stuff or just when she needs some quiet. I love that our library here also has a lot of digital resources. All the library books that I’ve been listening to on audio book have come from the library Libby app. I’ve done that with eBooks too. The best part is that I don’t have to try and remember to take them back – they return themselves!

So yes, I absolutely adore libraries. They are the best.

  1. I have to admit I’m jealous of your campus library job! I tried all the way through college and university to snag a library job, but they were extremely competitive and hard to get (also no one ever seemed to want to leave once they were in). It sounds amazing. I fully agree about Libby – I listen to audiobooks through my library all the time – I almost always have both my holds and checked out items lists maxed out, either with my own loans or as overflow when my kid’s card is full. I absolutely love it!

  2. I love libraries too. We are in danger of losing ours. They do offer lots of different things to try and stay open so we shall have to see. I love how they have been a big part of your life.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I really enjoyed reading about your library memories. Thank you for sharing! Libraries were a big part of my childhood too. The summer reading programs and story time and other activities. I wasn’t able to share that with my daughter as much unfortunately because I had to work during the week when those events are usually held, but I tried to make the library a special place for her growing up. She’s a teen now and we don’t go as often, but we still treasure the library.
