It appears as though every task Tiamat is ordered to carry out tears at his soul; but how can I know if that’s true? How can I trust him, if he’s the very one who destroyed this planet in the first place?

Tiamat and his brothers, a legion of one hundred half-angels, have orders to send all humans on to their final judgment. Yet in a moment of weakness, Tiamat risks his life to rescue a hiker named Kali from the very destruction he initiated.
Kali, thrust from the surety of her world into the boundless hell of Tiamat’s, must try to find a way to survive in the Earth’s vast, devastated landscape. Plagued by a legion of Nephilim bent on sending her on, she is forced to trust the one being who could prove to be her greatest enemy.

Excerpt

I lay awake for what seemed like hours after the men disappeared—my crossbow at my side and my blade returned to my belt—and finally fell into a restless, disorienting sleep a fathomless time later. The past few days had been grinding me down, and a heavy weariness inevitably dragged me into the consuming depths of slumber.

And like every other night, when I slipped into oblivion, my subconscious cruelly returned me to Tiamat’s arms. We were sitting in the sun near the precipice of Lookout Peak; Tiamat rested with his back against a large boulder, and I sat reclining against his chest, feeling the warmth of his arms enclose me. Everything was as it should have been; spread out below us was the familiar green swath of healthy, sturdy trees, bejeweled intermittently by sparkling, sapphire-blue lakes. They were, I thought, almost the exact color of Tiamat’s eyes.

I felt him gently kiss the top of my head and relished the sensation of his energy tickling its way down my spine. “I need to tell you something, Kali,” he murmured into my hair.

“Mmm,” I answered, closing my eyes and leaning my head back against him.

“You need to abandon this plan of yours.” He lightly stroked my hair, and his voice sounded thoughtful. “You know full well that if I catch you, it will force my hand. You already hate me enough as it is.”

“I don’t hate you,” I answered without hesitation, feeling my traitorous emotions overwhelm me. “I love you.”

He froze as though in shock. Then he rested his forehead against my hair, and I heard him swallow before moving again. “And loving me is even worse.” Tiamat slowly ran his hands down my sides and let them linger at the small of my back. “That is why it is far too easy to make you miserable,” he whispered into my ear. “You need to wake up and realize this.” And as he spoke those last words, Tiamat gave me a hard shove, sending me tumbling off the edge of the cliff.
