REVIEW: A Court of Thorns and Roses

Jumping around a bit with reviews – there are so many books I’ve read this year that don’t have reviews yet, it’s kind of embarrassing. Since I don’t want to stress about trying to get them all done, I’m going to instead focus on reviewing the ones that really strongly stand out. Like this one.

Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Review

Something I’ve noticed about Sarah J. Maas – most people either love her books or hate them. This will be the second series I’ve read of hers and, although I did enjoy the Throne of Glass series, I have to say that I absolutely LOVED this one!

Starting off with our main character, Feyre – I love her. Maas enjoys writing very strong female leads and this is no exception. Feyre is willing to do anything to protect the people that she loves, whether that means sacrificing herself to protect her father and sisters or throwing herself whole heartedly into the trials Under the Mountain. She doesn’t have the same resources that Celeana/Aelin of Throne of Glass had (i.e. assassin training – that would have been helpful!) but she is so strong of will that she will do whatever it takes to protect her people, whether her flesh and blood family or her new found family among the fae.

I also really loved the world building in this book, although the name was bothering me – Prythian. To me, that name sounds like it should be the adjective, like the land should be Prythia and things coming from there are Prythian (like America/American, Canada/Canadian, etc.). I liked the different fae courts and really wanted to see more about them, as well as seeing the difference between the high fae and the lesser fae. There were also some really cool monsters and baddies – the Bogge in particular was terrifying!

This book started off with Beauty and the Beast vibes and ended with Persephone vibes. At the end of this book, I was very confused by Rhysand’s motives versus his actions, but it made me want to read more to try and figure him out. I was more interested to learn more about him than I was about Tamlin and now, after reading the other books, I see why lol.

This book was an excellent start to this series!
