No Man’s Land

I’ve been feeling a bit out of sorts these past few days. Part of it, I’m sure, is because my daughter is gone for the week, visiting her dad in Florida. She’s gone before and I’m not too worried about it (although I will be slightly worried the whole time – it’s part of that whole “Mom” thing), but the house is strangely quiet when she isn’t here. A large part of my day is usually made up of driving her places and doing things for her and, while it’s nice to have some time to myself for a change, it feels very weird.

The other part is that strange, in-betweeny feeling during the week from Christmas to New Year’s. It’s not really the holiday season any more, yet there are still plenty of holiday decorations up everywhere. There are radio stations that are still playing some Christmas songs – I swear I heard some on Tuesday. There’s this feeling of let down now that Christmas is over, but still a feeling of anticipation for New Year’s Day and the possibilities that 2012 holds. It’s too early to really begin New Year’s resolutions, yet it’s almost impossible not to think about them.

I think of this time of year as No Man’s Land. It’s still technically the holidays (New Year’s Day is definitely a holiday, yes?), but at the same time, the holidays are over. The whole world seems to be holding its breath this week as the New Year comes closer. There are many things that I want to see happen in 2012, but that is another post for another time. For right now, I will try to wait patiently for its arrival and, at some point, think about cleaning up all the Christmas stuff.
