I haven’t done these in a while and I think I’m going to start doing them on Fridays again. It’s a good way to get my thoughts together as well as keep everyone up to date on what all is going on.
This has been a pretty good week for me, especially on the blog. I’m posting again! I’ve gotten reviews posted, even worked ahead a bit! I have a new system that is helping me to stay a bit focused, but more on that in a minute.
I haven’t talked about this much on the blog, mostly because I only really talk about books here, but at the beginning of this year, I started learning Korean. Might seem random, but over the past few years (thanks to my daughter), I started getting into K-Pop. I mostly follow the group BTS, and a few others, but I wanted to learn how to better understand some of their songs and to stop relying on subtitles for their other content. There is a group Discord server that you can apply to get into called Bangtan Academy where they have a bunch of people and resources to help you learn. It’s mostly self guided, but you do need to keep up with turning in assignments in order to stay on the server. It’s been really fun to learn the language, although I am really bad at it. Coming from an American English speaking perspective, it is so different! I think that’s why I find it so interesting.
Back to staying focused and being more motivated. They have a group on the server that is dedicated to setting small goal streaks, called “waves.” Each wave lasts for 10 days. Typically you pick three things that you definitely want to do each day for 10 days, and then three to six other things that you want to try and do each day for 10 days. You also have one major task that will be done sometime within the same period. While it’s expected that at least a few of your daily tasks will be related to your Korean studies, you are also encouraged to include anything else that you are trying to build a habit for. I’m in the middle of my second wave so far and one of my tasks to try and do each day was to write a blog post. It might be one of my regular weekly routine ones, it might be a review that will be posted later, but I have been writing every day so far for the past six days.
That’s huge for me! It’s nice that the group helps keep me accountable too. Not that there’s any real repercussions if I don’t do something, but still. We have these little charts that we share with each other to show what we’re working on and it’s really fun to see what other people are trying to do. Everyone is super nice and very encouraging. It has definitely helped me stay more focused, which has been nice since other parts of my life are a bit hectic.
I’m hoping to continue posting over the next few weeks, although next week might be tricky. My husband and I are traveling to Nebraska for our niece’s wedding and will be gone a good part of the week. I’m looking forward to seeing his family – we don’t get to see them often enough – but anytime you are traveling a long-ish distance, it’s stressful. I’m a particularly nervous flyer, so that adds an additional layer of anxiety on it. I’ll be okay once I’m there though.
I think that’s it for me this week. Let me know if there’s anything else you want me to talk about with these weekly wrap up posts. Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
