BLOG TOUR: Lock Every Door

Hello everyone! I am so excited to be part of the blog tour for this amazing book! Thank you so much to the Fantastic Flying Book Club for this opportunity!

About the Book

42368604Title: Lock Every Door

Author: Riley Sager

Publisher: Dutton Books

Release Date: July 2, 2019

Genre: Adult/Horror/Thriller

BlurbNo visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.

As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story . . . until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

Review: Y’all, this book was so good! Even though I had other things that I needed to read, I didn’t want to put this one down!

I absolutely love books that are set in New York City. It’s my absolute favorite place in the world and yes, a lot of its history is pretty dark. I’m sure every building on every street has a story, something I’ve always wondered about, which is part of what made this book so good.

Let’s talk about our characters. I absolutely loved Jules. She is a great narrator and someone who is easy to relate to. How many of us have been at the end of our rope, looking for some sort of miracle to help us get through the week? I know I have. She’s a very strong person, surviving the deaths of her parents and the disappearance of her sister, and when Ingrid disappears, Jules is determined to find out what is going on. But the thing is, there are so many twists and turns, it’s easy to see how Jules could either be reading way to much into things, or have her suspicions completely confirmed.

The pacing of the story was great as well. It never dragged, always kept me wanting more. There is a pretty big twist towards the end that I was in no way expecting, which was great. You know who some of the villains have to be, but you definitely don’t realize just how bad some of the people are until the very end. They are complex and intricate and just great to read.

This book had all the things I love: set in the best city in the world, interesting characters, and a story that I couldn’t put down. If you like mysteries and thrillers, check this one out. One brief thing: one of the genres listed for this one is horror, but there isn’t anything to graphic. So if you like suspense-filled stories, but don’t like a lot of blood, you’re good to go with this one.

GoodReads rating: 5 stars. I loved it!

BLOG TOUR: Art of Death

Hello everyone! Today I am very excited to participate in the blog tour for Art of Death by Becca Vincenza, hosted by Xpresso Book Tours! This was a super fun read, so please continue on to find out more!

SeriesCurse Breakers Book #1

Publication Date: September 4, 2018

Genre: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

Find It: GoodReads, Amazon

(At the time of posting, this was also available as a free read on Kindle Unlimited!)

Blurb: What if a single act of rebellion had the power to change your fate?

Rowan and Abel Hayes’ birth ended a centuries-old family curse, but being a curse breaker has its drawbacks. Now they live a life full of rules.

When Rowan breaks a rule, she sets a powerful chain of events into motion that she never could’ve imagined. Abel is kidnapped, and it’s up to Rowan to save her twin. Can she rely on the aid of an old friend who once betrayed her? Or will new enemies prove too strong for her to handle?

Review: Okay, first of all, this book is so much fun! I really enjoy these modern urban fantasy stories that take something mystical and magical and plop them into familiar settings and circumstances. If done right, it makes the story so much more believable and rich. And this story was done very, very right. Of course there are large necromancer families living in Alaska and Seattle! Why not? And werewolves! And vampires! Will-o-the-wisps! Gargoyles! Nymphs!

A very interesting magic setting, focusing mostly on death magic since the main character and her family practice it. Rowan is a fun character – a bit headstrong and stubborn, but hey, if my family was keeping secrets from me and had made all these deals about my life without telling me about them, I’d be a bit miffed too. I love how she is the youngest of all these big, burly brothers, but still manages to hold her own. I also really enjoyed the relationship between her and her twin brother, Abel, as well as their friendship with Indigo, a member of the werewolf clan that has allied itself to their family.

There is a lot more to learn and a LOT of things set up for the next book in the series, and I am very anxious to learn more. Especially about a certain something (no spoilers) that happened to Rowan’s body while she was captured (although if you read the preface at the very beginning, you probably have an idea of what happened). I’m sure that will have ramifications down the road.

Final thoughts on this one: this is a fun, fast paced read that anyone who loves a good urban fantasy story will enjoy. GoodReads rating: 4 stars.

BLOG TOUR: The Bone Charmer

I’m very excited to share this book with everyone. Check out this blog tour for The Bone Charmer by Breeana Shields, hosted by the Fantastic Flying Book Club!

About the Book

TheBoneCharmer_Cover (1)TitleThe Bone Charmer

Author: Breeana Shields

Publisher: Page Street Kids

Release Date: May 21, 2019

Genre: YA Fantasy

Find It: GoodReads, Amazon, Book Depository, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google Books

Blurb: In Saskia’s world, bones are the source of all power. They tell the future, reveal the past, and expose secrets in the present. Each village has a designated seer who performs readings for the townsfolk, and in Midwood, the Bone Charmer is Saskia’s mother.

On the day of her kenning—a special bone reading that determines the apprenticeships of all seventeen-year-olds—Saskia’s worst fears come true. She receives an assignment to train as a Bone Charmer, like her mother, and even worse, a match-making reading that pairs her with Bram—a boy who has suspicious tattoos that hint of violence.

Saskia knows her mother saw multiple paths for her, yet chose one she knew Saskia wouldn’t want. Their argument leads to a fracture in one of the bones. Broken bones are always bad luck, but this particular set of bones have been infused with extra magic, and so the break has devastating consequences—Saskia’s future has split as well. Now she will live her two potential paths simultaneously. Only one future can survive. And Saskia’s life is in danger in both.

Review: Oh oh oh oh, I really really liked this one! I was really excited to read it as soon as I saw that gorgeous cover, but let’s dive into what really works with this story.

First off, the world building was excellent. I really felt immersed into this place and its customs and beliefs. The way that bone magic works is very interesting and something I would love to learn more about. We get to see some of the training that goes into being able to work with the bones – and there are several different kinds of bone magic, including healing, seeing the past, present or future, controlling animals, etc. – but because of the way that Saskia evolves, her training ends up being highly unorthodox in both of her realities. In the next book (oh, please let there be a next book!), I think we will see even more of this.

Speaking of those two realities, I absolutely loved how they both mirrored each other, but were also distinctly different. It was enthralling to see how they were going to eventually connect at the end.

Basically, I loved everything about this book. I loved the twists and turns (of which there were many), I loved the characters, and I just adored the world. As I said before, I really hope that there is a second book in the works. The ending definitely sets things up that way and I want to see what happens next.

GoodReads rating: 5 stars all the way. This was awesome.

Blurb: “If Lorelai Gilmore of Gilmore Girls was dropped into a thriller, it might resemble this appealing novel.” –Kirkus Reviews

Thirty-eight-year-old Nicole Adams has given up on finding love. The single mother focuses on the two things she cherishes most—her sixteen-year-old son Justin and her art—while relying on the support of her friends Mike and Jamie and her loyal sister Caroline.

When she convinces a prominent Los Angeles museum to feature a large-scale installation of her ceramics work, she thinks her life has finally turned a corner.

Then Justin brings a girl, Daniela, home to spend the night. Daniela’s angry parents have thrown her out of the house because she’s pregnant with Justin’s child. Shattered, Nicole takes Daniela in and by doing so is drawn into the inner circle of Daniela’s family and a frightening world of deceit and violence.

Nicole struggles to keep life going as normal. Forced to deal with people she doesn’t trust or like, fearful for the future of both her son and the grandchild they’re expecting, Nicole wonders if she can do what she tells Justin to do: always have faith in yourself and do the right thing.

What We Do for Love: A Novel is a standalone story written by award-winning author Anne Pfeffer.

Review: I will say, this is a bit out of my usual genre. It’s actually been a while since I’ve read strictly contemporary novel, and certainly not a romance. While GoodReads lists this as a romance novel, and there is some of that in this book, this story is about a single mother who is on her very last thread of sanity.

I absolutely loved Nicole as a character. She is so strong, but at the same time, very real and easy to relate to. Her reactions to finding out about her teenage son becoming a father are understandable – she is terrified, angry, disappointed, worried, but above all, willing to do whatever she can to help him and his baby mama.

There is a lot going on with said baby mama, Daniela. She seems very mysterious and I kept waiting for the payoff of her story. It did not disappoint. Instead, it took what I was expecting and completely turned it on it’s head. I love when books can surprise me like that!

This book is branded as a thriller, but I think this is a book more about relationships. The relationship between mother and son, sister and sister, woman and man-she-had-an-intense-relationship-with-but-now-they-are-just-friends-but-ARE-THEY. And that’s just a few of them. There are a lot of relationships to dissect throughout this story and seeing how they all come together was very satisfying.

Bottom line: I enjoyed this book very much. I kept picking it back up over and over again to see what happened next. Thank you to Rockstar Book Tours for the review opportunity! And here’s another opportunity, if you want to check this book out: What We Do For Love will be available for FREE on Amazon May 22-24!

BlurbWhen being different leads to the best years of your life.

There are three key components required to get into the most prestigious, top spy academy in the world:

My name is Silver Spell Solange. No, I didn’t plan for my initials to be the same rank needed to enter the spy academy. But I would do anything to get into the one of a kind school. I have the magical capability of an Elemental Witch, the strength to kick anyone’s ass, and quick problem-solving skills to get my teammates out of any jam. There’s only one small problem – the other ‘S’ I’m missing.

I’m not a part of the supernatural race.

After realizing the my only shot at my dreams is at the brink of extinction, I’m unexpectedly teamed up with a werewolf, a dragon, a fallen angel, and a hellhound. The four of them carry the assets and abilities I need to gain my spot into the Supernatural Spy Academy (SSS).

With the clock ticking and not much leg room for an SS score, I accept their bet, knowing I’ll easily handle whatever they request from me.

I didn’t think their bet would lead me to date all four them.

It’s time for me to buckle up. This four-year roller coaster is about to begin, and its a bumpy one-way ticket to becoming the next “supernatural” spy.

“Any faster?! I swear he’s going to burn us to ashes!”

My head turned back to get a good glimpse of the ginormous black-scaled dragon following not too far behind.

“Hang on!”

I looked up to my teammate as he outstretched his wings.

“I don’t really have a choice here,” I commented. He looked down to raise an eyebrow at me, but since we were trying not to get caught and screw up this Quest, he returned his focus on catching up with the rest of our teammates.

We lowered into the forest before he did a swift left turn. I had no idea where we were going, but it looked like a cave was up ahead. I pointed to it.

“There?” I exclaimed. We swiftly entered the cave and jerked to a stop, a second from hitting the solid wall. I sighed in relief, but I knew we weren’t out of the woods yet.

My body was lowered to the ground and I turned to face my four teammates, all of them out of breath.

“You still got the ring?”

I grinned, slipping my hand into my bra. The four of them looked around the cave, not wanting to be caught staring at my breasts. I retrieved the little gold ring – presenting the gem for the others to see once again.

Even in the dim cave, it seemed to illuminate like multiple lights were shining upon it. I had no idea what magic it possibly possessed, but I couldn’t wait to use it.

My eyes stared at the gold ring, taking in the big white pearl that was surrounded by four other gems: a jewel as bright as fire, one that was a teal turquoise like water, one that twinkled like a golden star, and a gem as pure as the dark night sky.

There were letterings on the gold band, piquing my interest as I took it out of its protective box. I took a closer look, unable to comprehend how a ring could be so radiant.

What was most important was how this little piece of jewelry was going to be the key to my entrance into the best spy school in all the lands.

This is exactly what I needed. My golden ticket to Supernatural Spy Academy.
